Application of machine learning techniques for supply chain demand forecasting
نویسندگان
چکیده
Full collaboration in supply chains is an ideal that the participant firms should try to achieve. However, a number of factors hamper real progress in this direction. Therefore, there is a need for forecasting demand by the participants in the absence of full information about other participants’ demand. In this paper we investigate the applicability of advanced machine learning techniques, including neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and support vector machines, to forecasting distorted demand at the end of a supply chain (bullwhip effect). We compare these methods with other, more traditional ones, including naı̈ve forecasting, trend, moving average, and linear regression. We use two data sets for our experiments: one obtained from the simulated supply chain, and another one from actual Canadian Foundries orders. Our findings suggest that while recurrent neural networks and support vector machines show the best performance, their forecasting accuracy was not statistically significantly better than that of the regression model. 2007 Elsevier B.V. Forecasting Supply Chain Demand Using Machine Learning Algorithms
Managing supply chains in today’s complex, dynamic, and uncertain environment is one of the key challenges affecting the success of the businesses. One of the crucial determinants of effective supply chain management is the ability to recognize customer demand patterns and react accordingly to the changes in face of intense competition. Thus the ability to adequately predict demand by the parti...
متن کاملThe Impact of Forecasting Methods Combination for Reducing Bullwhip Effect in a Four-level Supply Chain under Variable Demand
Bullwhip effect in a supply chain, makes inefficiencies such as excess inventory and overdue orders during the chain. These problems can be reduced by appropriate predictions. Forecasting must be done in all levels of a supply chain. This research addresses the problem of optimal combination of forecasting to reduce the bullwhip effect in a four-level supply chain when demand is variable. For t...
متن کاملMachine Learning-Based Demand Forecasting in Supply Chains
Effective supply chain management is one of the key determinants of success of today’s businesses. However, communication patterns between participants that emerge in a supply chain tend to distort the original consumer’s demand and create high levels of noise. In this article, we compare the performance of new machine learning (ML)-based forecasting techniques with the more traditional methods...
متن کاملSupply Chain Forecasting Model Using Computational Intelligence Techniques
Nowadays, supply chain is more complex with the advance of technology. One of the important tasks in supply chain management is product demand forecasting as it provide initial figure for various plan to work on, for example, production, inventory, personnel. The complexity of supply chain makes the traditional techniques become less appropriate. This paper propose an application of Artificial ...

Modern studies in the field of environment science and engineering show that deterministic models struggle to capture the relationship between the concentration of atmospheric pollutants and their emission sources. The recent advances in statistical modeling based on machine learning approaches have emerged as solution to tackle these issues. It is a fact that, input variable type largely affec...
